I started my career in the automotive supply industry, where I held management positions in human relations, production management, project management, organisational change and product management. I started a second career at 50 initially using aspects of value management to improve supply chain integration and effectiveness within the automotive industry throughout Europe. I have applied VM in a wide range of organisations. In addition to automotive manufacturing, I have worked in aerospace, construction, oil and gas, utilities, transport, local government and the voluntary sector. This experience has been gained in Europe, the USA, the Middle East and Iran
I have witnessed important changes in VM over the last 15 years. These have been characterised by a move away from a traditional VE interventionist focus toward a whole life value based decision support approach, a move from being a workshop facilitator to being a value adviser, and with those changes a need to develop and understand a wider range of tools. I am particularly interested in developing competence in defining and measuring value, and working with organisations and teams to improve decision effectiveness.
My involvement on the Certification Board, the European Governing Board and both BSI and CEN reflects those interests. I am currently involved in updating Value For Europe so that it reflects both latest good VM and training practice. I am co leading activities within CEN to produce an Executive guide to the European standard, and in a much longer timescale working to review that standard (EN 12973) with a view of ultimately upgrading it to become an ISO standard.
I am 66, married with 3 grown up children. I am a keen tennis player and supporter of amateur music making. In addition to my commitment to the IVM, I am a director of Making Music, a national charity supporting and promoting voluntary music.
