The Institute of Value Management

I am a Chemical Engineer and have worked for 30 years in the Nuclear industry. My career has included working in R&D, process plant design, project definition and evaluation, business and strategic management. I have had significant involvement in the definition and delivery of projects and in managing people. I became interested in Value Management (VM) techniques and became a Facilitator to ensure the right approach for definition of each project was undertaken and understood by project teams. Focusing on stakeholder value creation rather than cost cutting alone is essential for the long term application of project solutions to meet customer needs in the Nuclear industry. I have applied many facets of VM in studies and workshops to make sense of complicated problems, set appropriate objectives aligned to business needs using shared information and use Function Analysis, Creativity and Innovation techniques to involve teams in reaching value centred solutions.

I have facilitated more than 50 VM studies since 1992 and have seen many soft and hard benefits enjoyed by project teams, projects and the organisation. I have introduced VM into British Nuclear Group by leading a central capability, coordinating and supporting a network of facilitators and integrating VM practices into the design process.

I became the IVM Northern Branch Committee secretary in 2005 and an IVM Executive Member in 2006. I believe the training and certification of Facilitators, custodianship of the repository of knowledge and development of relationships with many industrial organisations, government, professional bodies, academia and others are key services undertaken by the IVM to support the generation of wealth in the UK.
