FORTHCOMING EVENTS

Six Sigma and Lean Thinking, 10 July 2008, 7 for 7.30 at WS Atkins, Woodcote Grove, Ashley Road, Epsom KT18 5BW

This is a joint event with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)

Six Sigma is a set of practices, originally developed by Motorola and made famous by General Electric, to systematically improve processes by eliminating defects. It was heavily inspired by six preceding decades of quality improvement methodologies.

Lean Thinking is an expression by an American researcher who studied the manufacturing practices of Toyota and other Japanese car makers. It focuses on process improvement, but more holistically than Six Sigma, and requires a whole system view including a focus on people.

There are similarities but also important differences between the two approaches.

This session will provide attendees with an overview of:

  • what Six Sigma and Lean Thinking are, and why they should be implemented
  • how they can be integrated and aligned with other approaches for achieving business process excellence
  • what the key implementation considerations are

Speaker:

Ian Graham was Director of Quality for Hewlett-Packard, and spent time in the HP plants in Singapore and Malaysia learning the power of systematic approach. Ian formed PRISM Consultancy International in 1990, and is a principal consultant there. Recently he has been guiding organisations to learn and apply the appropriate methods of Six Sigma, and the adoption of Lean Thinking.

This event is free to members and their guests. Whilst it is possible just simply to turn up, if you would like to book a seat (and therefore ensure you have something to sit on), please contact Stephanie Clackworthy on 07941 112037 to be added to the list.

CIM Presentation on Sustainability and its Strategic Impact

To be held at Croydon Park Hotel, close to East Croydon Station (location map) on 13 March 2008.  Start time is 1830 and £25 price includes buffet.

Please book via http://www.cim.co.uk/NewsAndEvents/Events/EventDetails.aspx?ObjectID=15836

The implication of most sustainability activities is to put pressure on the capital productivity of a business.  So, what are the strategic implications of this?'

This paper will look at how shareholder value is impacted and where financial pressures need to be dealt with. In particular, it will consider its impact on brand value - which brand attributes contribute to brand value and establish a relevant price point. Which factors are sufficiently differentiating to provide a basis for competing?

In this context, participatory sessions will allow:

  • discussion around the key question - 'Can sustainability be claimed?'
  • the mechanisms by which it can be effectively communicated and trust in the brand generated
  • how the propensity to act sustainably by customers can be measured and the research implications
  • implications for the product design brief
  • the need for corporate-wide cultural change

The event is geared predominantly to marketers, but should also appeal to:
  • Marketing enthusiasts
  • Business development managers
  • Value & Risk professionals
  • Project budget holders
  • Strategy enthusiasts

Speaker:

David J Elliott BSc (Hons), DipM, FCIM

David Elliott is Managing Director of MPG International a consultancy-based research organisation. He is a consultant to the UNEP Forum on Advertising & Communication, part of the ESOMAR working group, formed the CIM Steering Committee on Sustainability and undertook the DTI/DEFRA study on the role of marketers in sustainable production and consumption. He has formed the Network for Responsible Marketers.

With a scientific background that included Environmental Physics and a consulting career that has encompassed major strategic reviews of businesses he is well-placed to bridge the gap between avid environmentalists and the business realities of their demands.

Registration and Networking from 18:30, Speaker at 19:00 and due to finish at 21:00.
